While the production principles for Kesi are very simple, the actual procedures are complex. First, the warp is stabilized on the wooden loom, and then the draft is placed beneath the warp face, using a brush to outline the draft on the warp face. Next, the threads are matched up with various colors according to the draft before being put into the shuttle, where weaving goes back and forth to form patterns based on the designs. Once the work is done, all the ends are cut off and the work is completed.
In order to perfectly transcribe the image onto the fabric, Kesi techniques vary, including the “knot”, “whipped”, “hook”, “closure”, “take the shuttle”, “around”, “picture-by” and “twisted flower line”. According to the drawing pattern and flexible use of various techniques, decorations need to be fixed with a needle, pen-dyed if necessary, and filled-up with colors. Kesi techniques create all kinds of beautiful works, in a complete expression of the extraordinary achievements in tapestry technology.
