Located in the Qingshui District of Taichung City (formerly Niumatou) where the Qingshui military base was “Niumatou Site”, situated on the Ao Feng Mountain in Town Park of the Taichung Harbor Zone, it represents the culture in the middle Neolithic period of the Central Taiwan. Designated by the name of the place where the site is excavated, “Niumatou Site” is also the first site named on the basis of a place in Taiwan. Most excavated potteries are red and brown with imprinted cord patterns. And the common types of stone tools are stone axe-hoes, knives, adzes, arrowheads, net sinkers, flakes, cores and other agriculture, fishing and hunting equipment. From 4,500-3,500 years ago, the ruins are mostly distributed along the edges of the coastal terrace in the Taichung basin area, low-lying river terraces and higher places of the basin area. In the latter period around 3,700-3,800 years ago, the culture began to spread to the hilly areas around the middle part of the rivers, and the sites left behind widely cover from Miaoli County, Taichung City, Changhua County to Nantou County and many others.
Excavated from the Niumatou Site, this part of the ruins is constructed with accumulated layers of soils and pebble. Taken out as a bulk from the site, this part of the ruins is demonstrated for public education.
