“Luantan Opera” officially announced as a traditional art‧Pan Yu-Jiao the Preserver of Culture
Date:2023-05-26 | Rate:1382“Luantan Opera” got its name during the middle period of Qing Dynasty, when the Qing court categorized Kunqu Opera as “Ya Section” and other regional opera melodies as “Hua Section”, which together were called “Luantan.”
Luantan Opera in Taiwan roughly comes in two types: Fu Lu (Old Style) and Xi Lu (New Style), and plays a major role among Taiwanese local traditional operas. Early on well goes a saying, “If one wants to eat meat, then pork belly comes first, and when it comes to drama, Luantan is incomparable.” This testified to the important place the opera played in people’s daily life during the early period in Taiwan. Over time, such treasures are in danger of extinction.
Luantan Opera is one of local traditional operas in Taiwan and Ms. Pan Yu-Jiao is the currently the only Luantan Opera artist left. She has been long dedicated to performance and teaching, her singing and acting nearly perfect. A well-rounded Luantan Opera master, she was recognized as a recipient of the Heritage Award. Luantan Opera, with its uniqueness and cultural representativeness, is truly worth preserving for posterity.
